Quality Engineer

Reports to: Quality Assurance Manager

Midland Manufacturing is a leading manufacturer of loading valves, pressure relief valves and level gauges for the railroad tank car, marine barge, and ISO storage container markets in North America. Midland is searching for a Quality Engineer to improve internal performance and drive results as we strive to improve the performance and functionality of our business. This individual will be an active and key member of the Midland team and have an integral role in driving changes through the Quality and Manufacturing Departments. The Quality Department is cohesive, driven and always looking for better ways to do things. The Quality Engineer will immediately contribute to the organization in the following critical areas:

Responsibilities:

  • Lead 2nd shift personnel as a change agent for the implementation and sustainment of lean manufacturing principles.
  • Apply statistical methods and perform mathematical calculations to determine manufacturing process capabilities to drive improvements.
  • Resolve non-conforming material problems through the use of root cause corrective action methodology.
  • Champion development of processes and procedures for the use and calibration of inspection equipment and tools.
  • Recommend and specify instrumentation, calibration and gauging needs.
  • Recommend methods for improving utilization of quality assurance personnel, tools and materials.
  • Communicate with management and shop floor personnel to assist in the development of production and design standards.
  • Review engineering specifications, orders, and related information to obtain knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities.
  • Confer with Midland Mfg. personnel regarding purchases, procedures, product specifications, manufacturing capabilities, and project status.
  • Perform internal audits.
  • Develop gauge R&R studies.

Required Skill Set:

  • Must have a professional and courteous attitude when providing guidance and communicating problems with out-of-specification parts.
  • Ability to use calipers, plug & thread gages, micrometers and other measurement devices.
  • General knowledge and experience with a CMM and/or CNC programming desired. Ability to learn CMM programming a must.
  • 1-3 years experience in a quality engineering role in a manufacturing environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Have the ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to make decisions and provide guidance for 2nd shift operators.
  • Knowledgeable in machining processes.
  • Results oriented.
  • Must be able to convey technical information effectively to other group members.
  • Must be a team player and possess active listening skills. Must be easy to approach and talk to, builds rapport easily, and is not afraid to ask questions.

Other Desired Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Brown & Sharpe CMM with PC-DMIS.
  • Ability to learn, perform and teach process capability analysis methodologies, FMEAs, gage R&Rs and in-process control concepts.
  • Use of Minitab or other statistical software package.
  • Exposure to CNC programming.
  • Knowledge of ISO procedures and auditing.
  • Bi-lingual in Polish or Russian, a plus.

This is an entry level position on second shift with great potential for growth and learning in the Midland organization. Short term expectations are for coverage of QA Lab responsibilities and support of 2nd shift production. Long term expectations are for growth into advanced Quality Assurance Engineering responsibilities.
